Research
2020-2021
In Fall 2020, I collaborated with three other team members of the Equal Access Clinic Network to study the association between social support and severity of depression through a retrospective chart review of thousands of patient visits. We conducted a literature review, wrote an abstract, and are currently drafting the manuscript with our findings. Our team's abstract got accepted to the Society of Student Run Free Clinics Conference, and we virtually presented our poster in March 2021.
2019-2020
During Spring 2020, I was a research assistant for Dr. Robert Leeman (Department of Health Education & Behavior) through a Course-based Undergraduate Research Experience (CURE). We focused on administering a mobile intervention to reduce at-risk alcohol use by college students. I primarily examined the potential moderating effect of indirect protective behavioral strategies and mediating effect of motivation to reduce drinking (see poster linked below for more information). Though the study was paused due to unforeseen circumstances, our research group was able to gather preliminary research and present this information, along with anticipated findings, at the Virtual Spring Undergraduate Research Symposium. The poster presentation can be found here: https://cur.aa.ufl.edu/2020/04/14/cure-alcohol-prevention-barnes-patel-and-schaefer/ Through this CURE, I learned and practiced key components of research: conducting a literature search through the Boolean method, drafting a mock Institutional Review Board protocol, maintaining participant confidentiality, analyzing data through SPSS Statistics software, and writing an APA-style research paper (including an abstract and tables/figures).
